I feel like part of the quality of LotM is that there is a slow burn of things being revealed, as well as a lot of internal monologues where people are trying to work things out about each other. The children of an orphanage in a remote village really admire Merlin Hermes, even though only from a fairy tale, they wish they could meet him.
